AVENUE of the GIANTS

SUNDAY, 26th JUNE.

It was a little overcast and cool when we left Eureka this morning for the 20 mile drive to Ferndale, a Victorian village founded in 1852 where we enjoyed a quiet stroll along the main street.  Being Sunday, and still quite early, most of the town hadn't woken up yet which meant we had the town virtually to ourselves for a short time.
Our next destination was the Avenue of the Giants.  This famed road has been called the finest forest drive in the world.  Lined by titan trees, the 31 mile stretch parallels Highway 101, is mostly flat with gentle curves and passes towns, campgrounds, picnic areas, river viewpoints and trails to natural wonders such as the Founders Cove, which inspired conservationists to save the trees.  The Avenue winds through Humboldt Redwoods State Park, one of California's oldest and largest parks and is amazing.  The walk along the trail through the giant trees is awe inspiring.
The final part of the day was the winding drive across a mountain range to the coast, which was shrouded in dense mist making visibility almost non-existent for the short drive to Fort Bragg, our overnight stop.  The mist is now heavy fog which we hope will have vanished by morning as our looked forward to coastal drive will be severely impeded by a pea-souper.
