Monday, 18th May.
We were both a little off colour today so weren't inclined to do anything too strenuous. Setting off from Baveno we drove along Lake Orta, stopping briefly at Orta San Giulio but as it was only about 10.30am, and lacking the energy to go exploring we opted to drive on, heading south towards Genoa. The scenery was uninteresting for most of the way, being through largely industrial and commercial areas and flat, dry terrain but changed considerably as we neared our destination.
We checked out two aires on the way, the first looked good but was close to main roads with a lot of traffic noise and no shade which was necessary as it was rather hot, the second was a car park with traffic on either side and again, no shade which is why we are now in Volpedo, about 24 kms east of Alessandria. It's not the best aire we've stayed in but there is shade, we're right outside a football ground and the manager of the local football team stopped after mowing the pitch and had a beer with Les and Shirley, telling them that there was to be a match played here tonight. It started at 9.00pm and we all watched through the fence...a high standard match with 'our' team the victors.
