GISBORNE

 SUNDAY, 20th October.

We set off from our accommodation in Opotiki just after 9.00a.m., farewelling our genial hostess and driving through the town for a look see before we hit the road towards Gisborne.  The town is old and tired and being earlyish on Sunday morning was very quiet.

After our drive through, we were quickly on to the road through the Waioeka Gorge, stopping several times to admire the scenery and take photos....and for roadwork stoppages

It was a lovely long drive, despite the inevitable roadwork stoppages and once through the gorge, we emerged onto flat land and vineyards on either side of the road.

Coming in to Gisborne

we were too early to check into our motel so headed for the beach.  We parked and sat in the car in the sunshine to eat the sandwiches Mike had made as the wind was too icy cold to sit outside.  There was a school of surfers trying out their skills to watch while we ate and a young dad parked next to us with his two young sons, in their little wetsuits and with their little boards, so there was plenty of entertainment.  We stayed there for a while, took photos

and then went sightseeing.

The very impressive Cook's Landing Memorial
a work in progress

Loading logs at the port

It was way too windy for Sydney & Boris out in the open at the lookout
so to avoid being blown away, they stayed on the dashboard in the sunshine

Like a giant sundial, Te Tauihu Turanga Whakamana is a large modern sculpture in the shape of a tauihu (canoe prow) that celebrates early Maori Explorers.

We ended the day with a very satisfying shared light meal of beef nachos accompanied by beer and a red wine.
