YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

WEDNESDAY, 15th JUNE.

We had a fair amount of travelling to do today so left Lovell early, heading west towards Yellowstone, making good time to and through Cody and stopping briefly at the century old Buffalo Bill Dam on the Shoshone River.  It still took about two hours to reach the east entrance of the park but it was such a gorgeous drive we didn't mind at all, nor did we mind the long drives through the park as it's just a wonderful place to spend time, with lakes, geyser basins with extensive walkways surrounding bubbling and steaming pools of various colours, waterfalls, rivers and of course "Old Faithful".  We just missed O.F. erupting and on being told he was due again in about 90 minutes, we decided to wait, along with hundreds of others.  It wasn't quite the spectacle we expected to see which was a little disappointing but we did see bison and elk, and were delighted to 'bump' into the North Carolina family of five that we'd met at the rodeo on Monday night.
We weren't able to see as much in the park as we'd have liked, owing to the fact that accommodation within 100 miles, if available, is cost prohibitive which meant we had to stay quite a distance away, reducing the time available to roam but we were extremely happy to see as much as we did.
After leaving Yellowstone at the west entrance, we drove north into Montana, where we had booked into an airbnb in Big Sky, a ski  village.  The young couple who were our hosts were very hospitable, their dog Belle was very friendly and as we'd all had a long day, we all opted for an early night.
