Rabac to Cres

Wednesday, 10th June.

It was very windy last night, had eased off a bit by this morning but we were a bit concerned that we might be in for a rough boat ride.  Mario drove us into Rabac and we went for coffee before boarding the boat for a 10am departure.  By this time the wind had dropped considerably and we sailed away to the accompaniment of a piano accordion played by a very proficient young man.  After an hour and a half, we arrived at the small village of Valun, stopping there for just over an hour and while the boat crew cooked lunch on board, we went for a swim in the cool, clear waters at a lovely little pebbled beach, glad of the beach shoes we'd bought yesterday for the purpose of swimming at lovely little pebbled beaches...and rocky beaches!  It appears that there are not many sandy beaches here in Croatia and as we'll be here for a few more weeks, the shoes are a necessity.
Lunch was superb...two grilled mackerel served with a delicious salad and crusty bread, with a drink to wash it all down.  The seagulls came to lunch, hovering around the boat for leftovers as we left Valun and headed for Cres, the main town of the island Cres.  This is a larger town than Valun and we spent two happy hours there before boarding the boat for the return journey.
On entering the bay, our accordionist began playing again to an appreciative audience. The lone male teacher accompanying the school group on board started dancing, embarassing a few of the early teenage students until they, and a couple of the female teachers, decided to join in and had lots of fun doing so.
A wonderful, thoroughly enjoyable day for about $A36 each all inclusive, which was excellent value.
