Saturday, 11th July.
This morning our farmer Anton (Toni) asked if we'd like to drive with him and his wife to their mountain hut as they were going to check on their cows that are spending the summer up there. We jumped at the chance and so for the third consecutive day we went up a mountain, only this time in a 4WD and not in a cable car. The hut is one of a group of six at 1,485 metres and to reach it we drove up a narrow, gravel track with many, many hairpin turns and the view was stunning! In September, Toni and his neighbour farmers will walk the cows down the mountain to their farms where they will spend the winter months. The walk takes three to four hours and is a wonderful sight with the farmers wearing their traditional costumes of leder hosen, feathered hats etc. and the cows adorned with flowers and bells...unfortunately we won't be here to see it.
We rode into Maria Alm again afterwards, visited the flea market taking place at the entrance to the village, treated ourselves to f.a. ice creams at one of the cafes and stopped off at the supermarket on the ride back to the farm where we spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing.
After dinner we rode back into Maria Alm to the beautiful church where 8 members of the Vienna Symphony Brass were giving a concert. The church was full but we only stayed for half an hour or so as we had to ride 'home' while it was still daylight. It's been another fabulous day!
