Bad Reichenhall

Friday, 10th July.
Our bike ride yesterday evening revealed a lovely town which included an altstadt with cobbled streets, many cafes and flower boxes everywhere, as well as spa gardens which we decided we'd visit this morning.
Today began with a welcome early morning call from Mireille and Mark who had been staying near Salzburg in order to explore that city and came to say goodbye before they resumed their travels.  We fell out of bed when they knocked on the door, had a quick tidy up and put the kettle on for a cuppa and a chat before they left...we'll be travelling in opposite directions from now on and unfortunately, probably won't meet again until next year.
We left shortly after on a bike ride to the Predigstuhlbahn to ride another cable car, 1614 metres up the side of the Predigstuhl.  It is the oldest large-cabin cable car in the world that is preserved in its original form

and from the top of the mountain there are breathtaking views of Bad Reichenhall, Salzburg and the surrounding scenery.

The cabin was packed on the way up...so much for our theory of getting there early and avoiding the crowds!  Most of the passengers were walkers, armed with their sticks and backpacks but that's all a bit too energetic for us, we were just there for the ride and the views so stayed long enough to enjoy both and were the only passengers on the return journey.
We rode into town then, found a shoe shop that stocks Skechers and bought a new pair (as the ones I brought with me are a little the worse for wear) and  bought a memory card for the camera (as the original one is full) and strolled through the wonderful Royal Spa Gardens, enjoying the shady wide paths, the colourful flower beds and exotic plants, the fountains and many benches throughout the park, the quiet reading room and the auditorium where live music is played at various times and the feeling of tranquility that prevailed.

We rode back to the camperstop then, packed up and left Bad Reichenhall and shortly after Germany, for the time being, and are now back in Austria.  We've driven through glorious alpine country today, there are pockets of snow still clinging to some of the tallest mountains, fir trees in abundance growing up the mountainsides and pretty alpine chalets everywhere.  Our stopover is on a farm near Saalfelden, where there is to be a car rally tomorrow, closing some roads in the area so we may be here for another night, which won't be a hardship, and we rode into nearby Maria Alm, a lovely ski village before dinner, resisting the temptation to sample the source of the delicious aromas pervading the air!
