Day One : FRIDAY, 23rd September.
Mike had the window seat this time and took many photos of the coastline of Montenegro and Croatia, the clouds, the Swiss Alps and farmland. |
We landed in Basel, Switzerland on time at 12.50p.m., having put our watches back 1 hour, were among the last to disembark as our cabin bags were somewhere down the back of the plane, walked quite a way to immigration, and waited in yet another queue to be 'let in' to Switzerland. There was one officer checking the passports of a plane full of people! This took well over 3/4 hour, and because of the long delays and the little sleep we'd had, we had already decided to bite the bullet and pay the exorbitant 65euro uber fee to deliver us to the motor home rental place, but wait!! When Mike pressed confirm on his phone, the fee suddenly increased to 144euro, due to heavy traffic!!! (for a 20km drive) So....we caught the bus to the Basel Railway Station, crossed the road and caught a tram to the German Railway Station, also in Basel, bought tickets to our destination across the border in Germany, and just missed a train so waited half an hour for the next one. Everything worked out in the end, we collected the motorhome we're renting for two weeks, the lovely Katya showed us all the ropes and we drove about 10kms to our overnight stop in Lorrach, in the south west corner of Germany. There is a beer garden/restaurant next door, we had dinner and drinks there, then strolled down the road and around the corner to Lidl for some breakfast provisions, then strolled back home for an early night.
Day Two : SATURDAY, 24th September. It rained heavily overnight and had not abated this morning. On checking the long range forecast, it would appear that rain is expected in this part of the world for the next couple of weeks so this morning we spent some time discussing our options, deciding to stick mostly to our original plans which were never written in stone and always subject to change. We paid a visit this morning to the Rotteln Castle in Lorrach Haagen, first written evidence of which appeared in 1259AD.
The lady in the castle museum kindly lent us umbrellas as it was raining steadily, she seemed fascinated by the fact of Australians in her castle, I don't think she'd ever met any before and she insisted that we make an entry in the vistors book after which she gave us 2 free postcards.
It was very interesting, we took many photos....for a change!
Then we took to the road and are now currently in our overnight spot in Murg, Germany, about 20 or 30 metres from the Rhine River with no definite plans for tomorrow. |
