Day 14 : THURSDAY : 6th October. An overcast day, beginning with a heavy mist and ending in bright sunshine. We spent more time travelling through the Black Forest.

Gorwihl |
In Gorwihl, where we stopped to visit a bakery/cafe for coffee and cake but alas, all the tables inside were occupied and it was too cold to sit outside so we had to settle for takeaways, then find a place to park to consume them. |
The 'beesting' we shared was huge. |
In the afternoon we returned to Lorrach for our last night in the motorhome and we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at the nearby Vanilla Restaurant.
Mike chose roasted ox cheeks |
and I opted for black angus steak with potato gratin, both meals superbly presented and both cooked to perfection, WUNDERBAR! |
Day 15 : FRIDAY : 7th October. We were due to return the motorhome to the rental place this morning, so packed and left our bags at the apartment we're renting in Weil-am-Rhein for the next two nights, and drove to nearby Maulberg for the drop off. The return process took a while, a staff member checked the vehicle out but couldn't find any faults and when all paperwork was completed another member of staff rang for a taxi to take us to the railway station. Not being familiar with the railway system, we boarded the wrong train, had to wait for another and by the time we reached our apartment, we were both feeling rather washed out so were happy to have hot showers, a sandwich and coffee on the balcony, and just sit in the sunshine. We're both still convinced that motorhoming, preferably with bikes, is the best way for us to travel in Europe but the right motorhome is a necessity....our rental was not the right motorhome for us, being a little small and cramped for space. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our two weeks, it wasn't long enough but then it never is.

A roundabout in Weil-am-Rhein |
Day 16th : SATURDAY : 8th October. After our little mix up with the trains yesterday and having studied timetables and routes on the internet, we decided to catch a train into the town of Weil am Rhein, in the south west corner of Germany for breakfast this morning, then take a tram into Basel, in the north west corner of Switzerland for a wander around the old town. We had a delicious breakfast, a stroll around Weil am Rhein and bought tickets for the tram ride into Basel,
crossing the German/Swiss border |
and 15 minutes later, the Rhine.
Basel is home to many beautiful old buildings |
Chocolates! |
Fountains |
Bridges |
and colourful trams. |
We spent a few hours strolling through the town, stopping for coffee and cake, spending some time along the river
and took a 2euro each ferry ride across the river, |
catching the tram from there back to Weil am Rhein |
via the Swiss/German border once again |
to wait half an hour for the train back to our 'home' station, |
and then walking to a local bar for beers before heading 'home' for a takeaway pizza dinner. from the pizza place across the road. An excellent day out. The sun even made an appearance just before 3pm!
Mike has the transport system sussed out now which is a good thing as we are on the move tomorrow. As we're leaving early on Monday morning to fly back to Athens, we've booked into a hotel close to the airport so we'll be catching a train to Weil am Rhein, Germany followed by a tram to Basel, Switzerland and then a bus to St Louis, in France. The actual travelling time is not terribly long, the time between connections can take a while so patience is required. We've spent most of our two weeks in Germany with two nights in France and three in Switzerland, will be sorry to leave but look forward to the next stage of our holiday in Greece and meeting our dear friend from England in Athens.
