EUROPE : Germany : Day 11

Day 11 : MONDAY : 3rd October.

Today is Germany Unity Day, celebrating the unification in 1990 of  West and East Germany so there will be no shops open, apart from service stations and some cafe/restaurants.  There will no doubt be festivals held all over the country, maybe we'll stumble upon one of them and join in.                             I overdid the walking yesterday when I know that I should have been resting my foot, but I did not travel half way around the world to sit in a box on wheels with my foot on a cushion so I'll continue to hobble when necessary.  Having said that, there's not been a lot of walking today.  There has also been no rain though the sky was overcast for quite a while and there was a heavy mist at times.

Our first stop was in Gosheim to avail ourselves of the motorhome services there and the sun made a welcome appearance, though there was some mist still hanging around.

The next stop was spontaneous as turning a corner while driving through the town of Wehingen, we immediately spotted a bakery/cafe which was open, and what's more, there was parking available right outside!   Mike was quick to claim the space as ours and we marched on in and ordered coffee and a slice of plum tart to share.                                                                                                                      Until today, we hadn't seen many caravans on the roads but today they were out in force.  Whether it's because it's a long weekend here or there was some sort of caravan convention we don't know.

We got onto the fast road then and drove on to Lake Titisee which probably wasn't a good idea on a    public holiday.  The place was packed, with people everywhere which was a shame for us as it's been the best part of some time since we last visited.  It wasn't crowded then and we'd enjoyed wandering around but we managed to drive through the crowds without hitting anyone, drove to the end of the lake away from the town and found a place to stop, parking next to another motorhome almost identical to our rental.  The owners were a French/Swiss couple and we chatted to them until they went walking to the nearby cafe for their Black Forest Cake.  They invited us to join them but as much as we'd have liked to, we'd had our plum cake not too long beforehand so declined

Leaving Lake Titisee, we drove through glorious forest country,

through Bernau and on to St Blasien,

where we indulged in enormous ice creams

followed by a walk around town

and now we are in nearby Hochenschwald where we will stay tonight.
