Catch up Blog

For the last few days the computer has been playing up and I've not been able to write the blog, consequently I've fallen behind and am now playing catch up.

On Friday 3rd July, after farewelling Mireille & Mark, we headed back into Slovenia after 4-1/2 weeks in Croatia, having my passport stamped at the border and buying a vignette to enable us to drive on the motorway.  We made it to Postojna in time for the 12 noon tour of the Postojnska Jama, one of the most famous show caves in the world with 21 kms of underground passages, galleries and halls, and an underground train which took us 150 metres below the surface.  The 90 minute tour was amazing, we took many photos but they really don't do justice to this stunning attraction.

We had a late lunch in the car park after the tour before driving through Ljubljana to a camp site at Smedlink.
On Saturday 4th July, we drove along the motorway towards Lake Bled, intending to visit, but when we came to a roundabout after exiting the motorway and found traffic banked up, barely moving with still 5 kms to go, we had a sudden and unanimous change of plans!  Pulling in to a shopping centre car park to consult the map, Mike noticed a car dealer nearby so asked a man there if he could advise us where  we could buy a Slovenia car sticker (we're collecting one from each country we visit as a souvenir), as we hadn't been able to find one in the service stations.  This very kind man said he had one in his car that we could have if we didn't mind having a second hand one, we were thrilled and in return, Mike gave him a koala, so he too was thrilled!

Back on the motorway we drove to Austria, stopping to have lunch by the memorial at Ljubelj, erected in 2014 on the site of the Nazi extermination camp from which internees died during the building of the Ljubelj tunnel.

We drove through the tunnel a little while later and were in Austria, but no border post any more.

Our overnight stop was in the small town of Bleiburg which we wandered through before dinner. There is a castle there but as it is not open to the public we opted not to climb up the hill to take a look.
Sunday 5th July was a day of travel with a long drive to Aggsbach Markt on the Danube, stopping for a couple of hours at Gaishorn am See where we thought we might stay overnight.

It was while we were studying maps and camperstop guides that we made the sudden decision to move on and two hours later we were sitting by the Danube, watching barges and cruising boats go up and down the river.

Monday  6th July.  A hot day.  A short ride to the pretty village with a visit to the small shop and to the churchyard.  I don't normally take photos of graves but those in the churchyard are so beautifully kept, I couldn't resist.

After doing some washing, defrosting the fridge, having lunch while watching the boats go by and relaxing in the shade of the trees for a couple of hours, we went for a longer ride to Spitz, a rather pretty town on the Danube, passing through a couple of equally pretty villages on the way, as well as orchards and small vineyards.

We plan to follow the Danube for a while, heading west and hopefully will do a bit of bike riding as we did on the Mosel River last year.
