ASCHACH to ENGELHARTSZELL : 43kms

Sunday, 6th May, 2018.

A fabulous day!  It was fine and sunny this morning though a little cool early on.  First stop was for our early morning coffee at a cafe on the waterfront, just a few hundred metres from last night's accommodation, before we started on the ride to Engelhartszell.

The path was excellent, the scenery spectacular

and included a picture postcard camping ground where every campsite had its own little garden, a
small village on the opposite side of the river

castles on hills, countless white swans, a Viking boat manned by tourists who were laughing so much they couldn't row in sync,

and cruise boats, barges and a speed boat or two towing skiers.

The hotel doesn't provide breakfast so we self catered today and bought yoghurt and muesli from the Spar supermarket, which we consumed before we left, and when we came across a picnic spot in the sunshine a little later, stopped for a while to eat the filled rolls we'd made from ingredients also bought at Spar.

Once we reached the village of Schlogen, and the famous Danube-bend Schlogen and had a look around,

we crossed the river by ferry to the northern side to continue the ride.

There were many cyclists out today, a sunny Sunday is irresistible for pedallers of all ages, and the cafes along the paths are always chokkers but at Freizell we managed to find a seat in the sunshine to eat an ice cream each.

The path went away from the river, briefly, and onto the road for a short distance and as Engelhartszell is on the southern side of the river, we had another little ferry ride,

arriving well before check in time so stopped at the imbiss near the ferry stop and had a beer and a butter pretzel as we didn't want to be too early.  (Any excuse!)

Arriving at our accommodation we were greeted by Shane from NSW, a fellow guest.  She and her friend Lyn had left their spouses at home, have ridden here from Munich and are bound for Budapest.  It was interesting to hear stories of their previous rides, they are more experienced than we are but we were able to exchange a few useful tips.

We wandered downtown for an evening meal before having an early night.
