In order to satisfy Mike's 'inner child', after leaving Riedenburg this morning we made a short detour to a nearby sommerrohdelbahn (toboggan ride), first discovered by Mike and Laurie on a previous stay in the Black Forest.
It was not very far back to the lock where we crossed the Main-Donau Canal to follow the path to Beilngries, stopping along the way to inspect and take photos of a reconstructed ancient village, evidence of which was found during the building of the canal,
a few towns close to the path and river,
a "do it youself" canal crossing,
a man loading a barge with gravel,
and when we stopped at a pub for drinks and a snack, we could see the black clouds rolling in
so got out the wet weather gear and as we only had a few kms to go, tried to outrun the rain but didn't quite make it. We were able to shelter in a bus stop with some other refugees until the rain eased, then stopped, and made our way to our overnighter only a little bit damp.
In the early evening we strolled into town, wandered around for a while,
then found a cafe/bar where we shared an excellent tasting plate washed down with beer and wine before strolling 'home' for an early night.
A lovely day with only a minor hiccup!
THE END! |
